SECOND LIFE LAND BUYING GUIDE

How to choose land in Second Life

A parcel gives you space to build a home, run a shop, display art or gather with friends in Second Life. Choosing one involves more than comparing a photograph and a price. Location, Land Impact, access and ongoing costs all affect what you can do with your virtual land.

This guide explains what to check when comparing Second Life land for sale on Rich Lands. Our listings describe virtual parcels, not physical real estate. Visit a parcel in your Second Life viewer and confirm its current details before purchasing.

Mainland and private region land

Second Life includes Mainland and privately managed regions. They can have different ownership arrangements, membership requirements, land fees and rules. On a private region, read the estate covenant and ask the estate owner about payments, building restrictions and access. For Mainland, check your account’s current membership and land allowance before buying.

Do not infer the land type from the scenery or from a feature such as “protected.” Check the region and parcel information in-world. Linden Lab’s official Second Life land overview explains the available land options. Confirm current account requirements and fees with Second Life or the relevant estate.

Compare size, price and Land Impact

Parcel size is shown in square metres (sqm). It helps you compare building space, but two parcels of the same size can have very different shapes, terrain and surroundings. Inspect the boundaries and decide whether your building fits before you buy.

The L$ price shown in a Rich Lands listing is the advertised purchase price in Linden dollars. It is not a quotation for all recurring costs. Ask about land fees, estate payments and other conditions separately. A low purchase price may still come with ongoing obligations.

Land Impact describes the capacity available for objects on the parcel. It is often discussed as prim capacity, but an object’s Land Impact and its number of visible components are not necessarily the same. Review the parcel’s capacity and current usage in About Land, and check the Land Impact of the buildings and furnishings you plan to use.

Protected, sailable and unblockable features

Protected surroundings

A listing marked protected indicates a feature of its surroundings, such as adjacent protected land, a road or water. It does not mean every neighbouring parcel is protected. Inspect each relevant boundary and neighbouring parcel in-world. Ask which side is protected and what the description refers to.

Sailable water access

For a boat owner, a water view and a usable sailing route are different things. Check where you can launch, whether the route connects to the waters you want to explore, and whether parcel access settings interrupt it. Travel along the intended route in your viewer and check crossings before deciding.

Unblockable views or access

“Unblockable” should be understood in the context of the specific listing. Ask what view or route the term describes and what supports that claim. Check neighbouring ownership and parcel boundaries yourself. Surroundings and access settings can change; a listing label should not be treated as an unconditional promise about the future.

Visit the parcel before purchasing

  1. Open the listing’s View on SL Map link and visit the location in your viewer.
  2. Inspect About Land to confirm the parcel name, area, owner, sale status and asking price. Make sure you are standing on the intended parcel.
  3. Check the boundaries, terrain, access settings, maturity rating and any covenant or building restrictions.
  4. Inspect neighbouring parcels and test any advertised road or sailing access.
  5. Confirm ongoing fees and who receives those payments. Ask about anything that differs from the listing.

Common questions about Second Life land

Can I buy land directly on Rich Lands?

Rich Lands is a listing website. It helps you compare parcels, see photos and reach the in-world location. There is no purchase checkout on this website. Confirm the seller and parcel in Second Life before completing a transaction.

Does the listed price include monthly fees?

The listing shows a purchase price. Confirm ongoing land costs separately with Second Life or the estate owner. Membership, land allowance and estate terms depend on the land and your account.

Are the photos enough to choose a parcel?

Photos are a starting point. Visit in-world to inspect the current surroundings, boundaries and access. Listing availability and parcel conditions can change.

What does the maturity rating mean for my plans?

General, Moderate and Adult ratings affect the region’s permitted content and access. Check Second Life’s current maturity rules and your account settings, along with any estate restrictions, before choosing a location.
